Total Solar Eclipse in Jackson Hole

Total Solar Eclipse in Jackson Hole

On August 21, 2017, America will be treated to its first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in nearly 100 years. That's why we're calling it the “national eclipse”. From Oregon to South Carolina, the eclipse will trace a 67-mile-wide path across the country while millions of Americans will witness a once-in-a-lifetime event as the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and day turns to night for close to three minutes.

The most dramatic scenery for this 2017 eclipse can be found in Wyoming. While Yellowstone National Park is just north of totality, Grand Teton National Park is squarely centered in the eclipse path and will surely be a magnet for eclipse observers. In fact, the town of Jackson has estimated that they will see an influx of roughly 40,000 people per day for the week surrounding the eclipse.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and earth lineup, turning day into night for several minutes and revealing the night sky, a 360-degree sunset, and the sun's corona shining from behind the moon. A total solar eclipse is a bucket list item for nature enthusiasts, stargazers, and photographers alike. Past viewers say it is one of the most thrilling things they have ever experienced.

Where should I be when the eclipse occurs?

Anywhere from South Carolina to Oregon lying along the path of totality will be great viewing locations. However, there is no better place to view this monumental event than near the Teton Mountain range. Jackson Hole will experience the total eclipse for one of the longest durations possible, 2-3 minutes at 11:34 am MST. The partial phases of the eclipse will last 2-3 hours depending on your specific location, starting around 10:15am.

An easy way to get to a mountain top for this spectacle will be to ride the Jackson Hole Tram which has a broad ridge on top which can accommodate many eclipse observers. This rarefied location enjoys 2 minutes and 19 seconds of totality. Another fine vantage will be at the top of the Teton Pass Highway between Jackson, Wyoming and Wilson, Idaho with a duration of 2 minutes, 15 seconds.

Fortunately, there are other scenic but lesser visited locations just to the east of Jackson Hole. The Gros Ventre Wilderness and the Wind River Range offer some of the best hiking and backpacking in the United States. For more information on the path of totality through Wyoming please click here.

What do I need to bring?

If you attempt to view an eclipse not properly prepared, there’s a significant chance your eclipse memory will be irreparable eye damage or even blindness. We all want to experience lifelong memories on August 21, but those memories should be indelibly imprinted onto our minds, not our retinas. Attempting to view an eclipse with an unfiltered optical device is like holding a magnifying glass to your eye while focusing direct sunlight through the lens.
